The Listowel Memorial Hospital Foundation needs your support to purchase essential equipment for our Healthcare Community. This enables our doctors, nurses, and staff to continue to offer you, your families, and our community access to high quality healthcare services close to home.

You can help by making a donation to the hospital through the foundation. Your generosity can make a huge difference. There are many ways you can help:

~ A gift through cheque, credit card, or cash

~ A gift in memory of a loved one.

~ A gift in honor of a friend.

~ Living Memorials - a gift of property, securities, art, or a gift in kind.

~ Host a special event, with proceeds going to the Hospital.

~ Volunteering

~ A legacy gift.

Making a Donation
Many donors receive great satisfaction and goodwill when they see what their donations provide. Donations can be made as a single gift or in a monthly/yearly giving program. They can commemorate any occasion; birthday, anniversary, retirement; get well, new arrival, best wishes etc.

The Listowel Memorial Hospital Foundation is a registered not-for-profit charity with a charitable tax number of 868717 RR0001.

Currently the combined federal and provincial tax credit for cash and cash equivalent donations equals 46.4%. This means a gift of $1,000 will result in a tax savings of $464.00, so the actual cost of the gift is only $536.00. Please ensure you include an address where your gift receipt can be mailed to.

Cash or Credit Card Donations:
Cash donations can be made in person at the Foundation office which is located at 255 Elizabeth St. E, Listowel, Ontario. We are located on the bottom floor of the Listowel Hospital.

Other Ways to Give
The majority of the Listowel Memorial Hospital Foundation's support comes from annual cash donations, for which the Foundation is very grateful. But there are many other forms of support that are an increasingly attractive alternative which can benefit you, the hospital and future generations.

You can arrange your financial support to enable you to take care of the needs of those close to you, while at the same time showing your commitment to healthcare in your community by making a lasting contribution to the hospital.

A Bequest:
A simple way to leave a charitable legacy is to name the Listowel Memorial Hospital in your will be way of a bequest.  You will feel good now knowing you will be making a significant and lasting difference to a cause you care about.

Your bequest could either be a fixed amount, or a percentage of what is left after taxes and other costs have been paid.  Your estate will receive a donation receipt for the amount of your beques, which can offset income taxes owing.  The donation receipt can be used in the year of death or carried back to the previous year, and offset up to 100% of net income.

Of course, your family and others who are dependent on you should always be a priority in your will.  However, due to the favourable income tax treatment, a bequest can effectively redirect some or all of the funds that would otherwise have gone to pay taxes.  If you had the choice to give a portion of your estate to the government, or leave a gift to the hospital, which would you prefer?

The answer appears obivous, but it still may be difficult to know how to make the gift a reality.  We recommend you consult with your lawyer and other advisors such that your will is properly drafted and your wishes are met.  We also suggest having your children involved in such decisions:  they will be able to celebrate their parents' goals of making a differenece in their community.

An Annuity:
Annuities are available for special circumstances allowing you to make a significant gift to the Hospital immediately in exchange for lifetime security. Using the donor's gift, the Foundation purchases an annuity. The annuity provides a source of lifetime income for the donor. At the time of death, the Foundation would receive the remainder of the investment.

A gift of Real Estate:
A gift of real estate opens the possibility of a large gift without using liquid assets. A gift of real estate makes it possible for you to make an immediate gift and receive an immediate charitable receipt. If a principal residence is given, no taxable capital gains are triggered. A gift of real estate can take two options. First, an outright gift would result in a tax receipt for the fair market value of your property. The second option would be if you chose to give the gift of your property but retain the right to reside in the home (such a gift requires that the property be irrevocably transferred to the Foundation). In this case you would continue to pay all costs related to the property. The actual transfer of the property occurs when you desire.

A Life Insurance Policy:
A life insurance policy is an easy and uncomplicated way to make a planned gift. As the owner/beneficiary of the policy is Listowel Memorial Hospital Foundation, the insurance proceeds at death are not included in the value of your estate thereby reducing probate fees otherwise payable by the estate. A sizeable gift can be made at a fraction of the gift value when comparing the face value of the policy with the amount of the premium. It is truly a way in which you can make a contribution larger than you have ever dreamed possible. A new policy can be purchased and assigned to the Listowel Memorial Hospital Foundation as owner and beneficiary. You will receive tax receipts for the annual premium you pay. An existing policy ownership can be transferred to the Foundation and a tax receipt will be issued for the cash surrender value, plus each subsequent premium payment you can make. In both cases immediate tax benefits will be realized. By structuring your donations in this way, you benefit today from ongoing tax credits for your premium payments, and your hospital receives what could be a very large gift in the future.

A Gift of Marketable Securities:
Gifts of securites (e.g. publicly traded stocks, mutual funds) receive a very favourable income tax treatment.  The government has elimiated capital gains tax for securities transferred directly to registered charities.  You will receive a donation receipt for the market value of the security, just as though you had made a donation of cash.  The combination of these two items makes giving securities an attractive option.

For example, if you transfer securities to the Foundation worth $5,000, not only do you not have to pay tax on any capital gain, you will receive a donation receipt for $5,000 that you can use to reduce your income taxes.

It may be worthwhile to review your charitable donation planning with your financial or other professional advisor in order to take advantage of the generous provisions involving gifts of securities.

Legacy Giving
The majority of the Listowel Memorial Hospital Foundation's support comes from annual cash donations, for which the Foundation is very grateful. But another form of support, Legacy Giving, is an increasingly attractive alternative which can benefit you, the hospital and future generations. Legacy Giving is a way to arrange your financial affairs to enable you to take care of the needs of those close to you, while at the same time, showing your commitment to healthcare in your community by making a lasting contribution to the hospital.

Individuals chose to leave estate gifts for different reasons. For some, it is a way to ensure that their memory lives on, for others, it is a way to mitigate the tax implications of transferring one's estate to surviving relatives, and for others, it is simply a way to ensure that their favorite charity is able to continue its important work. Leaving a bequest in your will to the Listowel Memorial Hospital Foundation is an ideal way to continue making a difference to the health of our community.
